We got up early and walked the 1.7 kilometres back to Korčula’s old town before Hugo’s workday began.

The timing worked perfectly. The air was still cool and the town was almost empty, giving us the narrow stone streets largely to ourselves.

These were the narrowest lanes we had encountered so far. They sloped away from the old town’s main “rib” towards both sides of the peninsula, with a glimpse of the sea waiting at the end of almost every one. From above, the layout resembles the skeleton of a fish; from street level, it meant that every turn seemed to frame another little piece of blue water.

We zigzagged down one lane, climbed back up another and repeated the process through several more, enjoying the old town before the heat and crowds arrived.

Before leaving, we returned to the grocery shop for lunch and dinner supplies.

On the walk back to our apartment, Caro stopped for a swim near the old town.

A little farther along, closer to the apartment, both of us went into the water again. It was becoming increasingly difficult to walk past clear Adriatic water without swimming in it.

Hugo worked for the rest of the day. Then, at 17:00, we went out for our third swim of the day.

For dinner we made pasta with bolognaise sauce from a glass jar and finished it with Parmesan.

We also continued our colour photo challenge, this time looking for orange and brown details around Korčula.

It was a quiet day: an almost-empty medieval town, three swims and enough work in between to justify all of them.
