Day 17 — Three transport tickets and one hour in the baths

2026-08-14T19:43:17+02:00August 13th, 2026|Categories: Europe, Hungary, Trip Report|

We got up at 08:00 and had a slow final coffee at our guesthouse in Visegrád. Our Budapest Airbnb only showed a 16:00 check-in, so we were not quite sure what we were going to do with ourselves and our backpacks for most of the day. We checked out at around 09:40, after which Hugo [...]

Day 16 — The red trail and a 50-minute town visit

2026-08-12T22:09:22+02:00August 12th, 2026|Categories: Europe, Hungary, Trip Report|

We got up at 06:30 again and had coffee. A litre of milk — tej in Hungarian — cost only about R10. We packed our daypacks and set off on one of the many local trails, following the red marker all the way to Pilisszentlászló. We stopped for cheese and salami buns beside a natural [...]

Day 15 — Slovakia, a basilica and fish by weight

2026-08-12T22:09:20+02:00August 11th, 2026|Categories: Europe, Hungary, Trip Report|

We set an alarm for 06:30, had coffee and shared a cheese and salami bun before taking the bus from Visegrád to Esztergom. We missed the stop where we had intended to get off, but it worked out rather well. The next stop was closer to the Mária Valéria Bridge, so we decided to walk [...]

Day 14 — A castle picnic and our first Hungarian feast

2026-08-12T22:09:19+02:00August 10th, 2026|Categories: Europe, Hungary, Trip Report|

We slept until almost 09:00. Hugo quickly went to the shop for milk, bread, salami and cheese, while we drank coffee and made sandwiches to take with us. Then we headed back towards the castle complex, this time aiming for the Citadel higher up the hill. From our guesthouse it was a pleasant 45-minute hike [...]

Day 13 — A night train, 36 degrees and Solomon’s Tower

2026-08-12T22:09:17+02:00August 9th, 2026|Categories: Europe, Hungary, Trip Report|

Caro woke often; Hugo slept more soundly despite the green night light glowing in the compartment. We only discovered later that it could also be switched off. When we woke, the train was in Vienna. We snoozed a little longer on the lower bunk until breakfast arrived at 07:30. We could choose seven items each. [...]

Day 12 — Die rondte, a pork knuckle and the night train

2026-08-12T19:37:22+02:00August 8th, 2026|Categories: Europe, Germany, Trip Report|

Our last day in Germany began with pre-breakfast, because apparently an ordinary breakfast was not enough. Monja had baked scones, which we ate with strawberry jam and cream. For the main breakfast we made omelette wraps — something new that we could introduce to the Kraemers before leaving. Afterwards we got on the bicycles for [...]

Day 11 — The short hike that ended at 22:22

2026-08-12T19:36:36+02:00August 7th, 2026|Categories: Europe, Germany, Trip Report|

We had a slow morning and packed for what was supposed to be a short hike through the Reichenbachklamm. We only reached the car park just after 13:00, which seemed perfectly reasonable for a short hike. Starting gently beside the water. We stopped for a picnic next to the river, then followed the gorge upwards. [...]

Day 9 — From the Schwarzer Grat to two lakes

2026-08-09T21:16:49+02:00August 5th, 2026|Categories: Europe, Germany, Trip Report|

We started Wednesday early with a visit to the Schwarzer Grat. The observation tower is at 1,118 metres and the clear morning gave us views across the Allgäu and towards the Alps. Early morning at the Schwarzer Grat. The Alps in the early morning light. At the Schwarzer Grat observation tower. From there Anton and [...]

Day 6 — A long Sunday evening at the lake

2026-08-02T23:47:55+02:00August 2nd, 2026|Categories: Europe, Germany, Trip Report|

On Sunday morning we went to church with the Kraemers. Sunday morning at church with the Kraemers. For lunch we had ribs with pumpkin and corn, and afterwards we had an afternoon nap. At 17:00 we went to the Niedersonthofener See. At the Niedersonthofener See. We swam and stayed at the lake until 20:45. It [...]

Day 5 — Down and back up the Breitachklamm

2026-08-02T23:54:24+02:00August 2nd, 2026|Categories: Europe, Germany, Trip Report|

On Saturday we went to hike the Breitachklamm. It rained while we were driving there, but the weather was perfect by the time we started walking. We parked at the top, just before the Austrian border, and walked down to the ticket booth. From there we turned around and hiked back up through the canyon. [...]
