Day 19 — A very low Danube and a very expensive lángos

We got up a little later and left at 08:40, but it still seemed to be early by Budapest standards. Apart from a few joggers and cyclists, the streets were remarkably quiet. We crossed the Chain Bridge again and followed the Danube towards the Hungarian Parliament Building. The river was extraordinarily low. Budapest's gauge reading [...]

Day 18 — Coffee before the crowds and Budapest’s ruin bars

This morning we got up just before 07:00. Caro made coffee to go and cheese-and-salami buns, and we headed up to Fisherman’s Bastion, just behind where we were staying — although “just behind” involved rather a lot of steps. Fisherman’s Bastion in the early morning. The upper terraces can be reached for free before 09:00. [...]

Day 17 — Three transport tickets and one hour in the baths

We got up at 08:00 and had a slow final coffee at our guesthouse in Visegrád. Our Budapest Airbnb only showed a 16:00 check-in, so we were not quite sure what we were going to do with ourselves and our backpacks for most of the day. We checked out at around 09:40, after which Hugo [...]

Day 16 — The red trail and a 50-minute town visit

2026-08-12T22:09:22+02:00August 12th, 2026|Categories: Europe, Hungary, Trip Report|

We got up at 06:30 again and had coffee. A litre of milk — tej in Hungarian — cost only about R10. We packed our daypacks and set off on one of the many local trails, following the red marker all the way to Pilisszentlászló. We stopped for cheese and salami buns beside a natural [...]

Day 15 — Slovakia, a basilica and fish by weight

2026-08-12T22:09:20+02:00August 11th, 2026|Categories: Europe, Hungary, Slovakia, Trip Report|

We set an alarm for 06:30, had coffee and shared a cheese and salami bun before taking the bus from Visegrád to Esztergom. We missed the stop where we had intended to get off, but it worked out rather well. The next stop was closer to the Mária Valéria Bridge, so we decided to walk [...]

Day 14 — A castle picnic and our first Hungarian feast

2026-08-12T22:09:19+02:00August 10th, 2026|Categories: Europe, Hungary, Trip Report|

We slept until almost 09:00. Hugo quickly went to the shop for milk, bread, salami and cheese, while we drank coffee and made sandwiches to take with us. Then we headed back towards the castle complex, this time aiming for the Citadel higher up the hill. From our guesthouse it was a pleasant 45-minute hike [...]

Day 13 — A night train, 36 degrees and Solomon’s Tower

2026-08-12T22:09:17+02:00August 9th, 2026|Categories: Europe, Hungary, Trip Report|

Caro woke often; Hugo slept more soundly despite the green night light glowing in the compartment. We only discovered later that it could also be switched off. When we woke, the train was in Vienna. We snoozed a little longer on the lower bunk until breakfast arrived at 07:30. We could choose seven items each. [...]
