Less than a week after researching the Maldives for the first time we landed at Velana International Airport. The single landing strip fills the whole length of the island. Directly outside the terminal we boarded the 15 minute ferry to Male, the capital of the Maldives. The island is only 2km x 2km, but has a population of 133 412 – one third of the population of the Maldives, thus making it one of the most densely populated cities in the world.
