Bhaktapur is an hours drive from Kathmandu even though it is only 16km away. We took a local bus which only cost 30 rupees (R3.75) per person. At all entryways to the old city there are ticket booths with operators looking for any glimpse of white skin so that they can charge 1500 rupees entry fee per person, while everyone else streams in and out of the town. So one can either take the bus to Bhaktapur 50 times or enter once. One might argue that it is still worth the price as some of the buildings are quite spectacular to see.
